CIS 313 - Networking

Sharing information has always been a fundamental aspect of healthcare and business. The technology to share information instantaneously has been the ideal since time began. Networking (CIS313 - Syllabus) at Northwestern University, teaches the basics of the current technology that has allowed to reach this goal.
I was familiar with the basic terms and components of a computer network, but had not learned much about basic network configurations or established a specific plan for one prior to this course. Being able to create work with a partner to develop the best recommendation possible given restrictions of budget and need, as well as develop and document an appropriate business rationale was a new opportunity for me and a good introduction to the ‘hard side’ of Informatics. I think the course provided me a very effective platform to accomplish these goals.
I was able to expand on learning that I had accomplished by setting up networks at home and in my Family Practice office on my own early on, and subsequently setting up more robust internal and external network connections as we established a residency program and moved into a full EMR. Building this network project I was able to call upon most of that experience.
As I continue to progress in Informatics I expect to build further on this strong knowledgebase and leverage it in contracting, design, implementation and utilization of information systems.
