MMI 404 - Enterprise Operations

Electronic Medical Records have value at every level of medical care, but become especially useful in larger organizations or when information is being shared between different organizations. Implementing EMR within an organization requires an understanding of the culture and operations.
Learning the business, regulatory and social organizational structure within which Medical Informatics is built is critical to being able to develop an effective system. Understanding this allows for better determination of appropriate evaluation methods and expected outcomes. As a physician, a key role for me will be to translate clinical needs to IT and explain IT requirements to clinicians. With that experience it will be easier and more likely that I will be able to predict the technology application attributes that will be effective within the organizations operational units. Achieving these objectives allowed my team to develop an effective proposal to obtain funding for a major IT initiative and to look at the aspects of the hospital budget as they relate to the Return on Investment for IT initiatives.
Developing a process for taking the organization from selection through implementation created the opportunity to learn about change management from needs assessment to measuring return on investment.
This opportunity to academically evaluate the implementation process was especially effective as I evaluated past and current activities in my own organization. I anticipate that I will be able to use this to help 'step away' from the process as I work with projects in the future. Being able to develop an overview of the process improves 'situational awareness', a key skill that helps to prevent complications before they develop.
