MMI 481 - Leadership

    The ability to build a system is a technical skill.  The ability to implement a system is a leadership skill.   There are a large number of well designed and build systems that have failed because the organization was unable to work with it.  The failure is either of selection (not assessing or heeding the needs of the organization), or managing change (not preparing or following through on the process). 

As leaders we will be expected to be able to tactically analyze the different forms of value (economic, meaning, and social) and the role value, experience, and research play in effective leadership interactively as we work through our days.  Using that daily experience we will be able to help the organization strategically to work through the theoretical foundations for successful leadership as well as compare and contrast the major leadership theories.   The outcome of this strategic planning is then applied to solving problems within the organization, allowing the leadership to develop expectations regarding the context and outcome of applied leadership in selected situations.  When expectations are not met, then analysis and interpretation of that particular performance-based organizational issue can be done, allowing for development of a solution based application of appropriate leadership theories.  The context of the problem – e.g. the  biases created by responsibility, privilege, value, culture, ethical considerations, and the appropriate use of authority and power – lend color, depth and texture to the problem and the solution.

     Our project was able to synthesize best practices regarding to create a plan for engaging, implementing, and sustaining planned organizational change.  A significant challenge of the presentation was to make everything an executive summary and create a story of change.  Concurrently we created 3 cards which identified the principles by which successful leaders operate and our own personal philosophies and styles.   Our task was  to expand this so as to better understand our interpersonal influence in our own organizations.


    Being vigilant to determine the style of leadership that you possess, and the leadership of the people with whom you interact, becomes the basis for effective communication.  Taking the opportunity to listen, observe, develop a plan, and then act offers a leader a place begin to measure the effect of change.   Establishing personal principles of interaction provides a moral compass by which you can assess the direction of negotiation and progress. 

    The Future of Informatics depends on developing strong leaders.  It is incumbent upon Informatics leaders to be knowledgeable within the field they work and to direct the energy of the users toward improving the function of the system.  In most cases leaders help to develop vision and educate the users about what that means..  In turn the users educate the leaders on changing requirements, approaches to problem solving, and issues of concern.   Becoming a leader in Medical Informatics is a challenge I look forward to.
